The inn has been in the hospitality game one way or the other since the middle of the 18th century, from the era of horse-drawn coaches to the age of unleaded petrol. It's run with appealing bonhomie and informality by Geoffrey and Katherine Smeddle, who have created a comforting environment in the three interlinked dining rooms that showcase Geoffrey's impressively assured Scottish country cooking. A firm classical underpinning bolsters starters such as poached quail eggs with mushroom duxelles in hollandaise, or potato-crusted cured salmon with cucumber in oyster cream sauce. The balance of upstanding flavours and gentle richness is sustained into main courses like honey-glazed breast of duck from Alloa's Gartmorn Farm, which comes with a sweet-and-sour slew of Jerusalem artichokes and salsify, as well as the fruity elements of gingered plum purée and a bitter orange sauce. Fish could be a mix of red mullet and langoustines in seaweed butter with poached white beans and scarlet elf cap mushrooms. Finish on an airily risen high with mango and passionfruit soufflé, served with salted banana ice cream and rum and raisin madeleines, or with a plate of pedigree Scottish cheeses in impeccable condition from the trolley. A six-course tasting menu is on hand for those who find themselves indisposed to choose.<
