For many people, particularly the legions of international pilgrims who jet in from the States and Asia, St Andrews is all about golf. If you happen to be a golf-mad foodie, both passions are catered for simultaneously in the Macdonald Rusacks Hotel, where front-row balcony seats for the golfing action at the 18th hole of the Old Course are available for the price of a meal in the Rocca restaurant amid a chic contemporary decor of richly-coloured fabrics and darkwood tables. The kitchen’s food is modern, ingredients-led from the best local supply lines, and provides deep satisfaction, the six-course taster opening, perhaps, with cured salmon supported by pressed cucumber, lemon, hazelnuts and fennel, followed by trompette mushroom risotto with parmesan crisp and cep foam. Classy fish dishes may include halibut served with clams, seafood chowder and chorizo, while meatier ideas take in braised beef cheek with Savoy cabbage, potato mash, Puy lentils and confit shallot. Desserts aim for the same level of straight-talking impact with the likes of lemon curd sponge with raspberry ice cream.
