Paul Kitching and Katie O'Brien’s luxurious restaurant with rooms is a real one-off. Occupying a sandstone Georgian townhouse, there is true personality on the inside, with contemporary design and classic elegance combining to create somewhere rather special. The four bedrooms have a classy finish, and the high-ceilinged restaurant features ornate plasterwork, curvaceous banquettes, some quirky design touches – yes, those are giant moths on the carpet – and a glass partition separating diners from the open-to-view kitchen. Paul is one of the UK's most idiosyncratic chefs, and with Katie leading the line front-of-house with charm and efficiency, they form a potent partnership. If you're wondering what the name is all about, the answer lies in the five-course menu format: a choice of two starters, two mains and two desserts, with one soup course and a cheese course in-between, with the line-up jumping to 31313 at dinner. There's a sense of fun in the menu descriptions, which will need some elucidation from Katie, but rest assured, this is creative and dynamic modern food, where peerless ingredients are cleverly worked into dishes that inspire and amaze. Dinner might open with prawn and haddock curry, the accompaniments of apricot, asparagus, coconut and mushroom adding bursts of earthy and sweet flavours. 'Beef fillet nut muesli' might appear as a main course, the top-class fillet matched with swede, turnip, Chardonnay and mayonnaise. Next up is cheese, before the finale, perhaps the playfully described ‘Boss’s glazed lemon meringue marzipan, apple nut crumble thingy’, or a reworked ‘trifle meets compôte’ featuring pears, plums and nuts.<
