The beachside location and terrace are out of this world, and a breezy, New England-style decor adds to the feeling of a summer idyll in South Sands’ light-filled restaurant. The kitchen hauls in some prime Devon ingredients as the backbone of an unchallenging menu, kicking off with refreshing Salcombe crab salad with lemon gel, compressed cucumber, rosemary and lemon croutes and crisp sea lettuce followed by 12-hour braised Dartmoor-reared ox cheeks with soft mash, heritage carrots and braised puy lentils. Desserts might include dark chocolate and hazelnut delice served with a piquant orange jelly and rosemary ice cream or poached rhubarb with lemon crumb and tonka bean ice cream.
