With pretty gardens running down to the River Rothay, the Victorian Oak Bank Hotel has plenty of Lakeland charm. The comfortable and refined Dining Room restaurant is the setting for some ambitious, creative food and the kitchen clearly has an eye for presentation and enticing combinations. A first course, for example, might consist of torched Cornish mackerel, fresh curds and fennel. Next up, slow-roasted pork collar, bacon choucroute and mustard; or wild stone bass, chicken wings and cauliflower. For dessert, try lemon tart, honeycomb, white chocolate and yogurt, or maybe the-not-so-sweet-sounding smoked beetroot parfait, sweet cheese, hibiscus and celeriac.
