> The name may sound like a modest fell walkers’ lodge, but this former 17th-century coaching inn trades as a slick boutique restaurant with rooms these days. Lording it in the forest high above Keswick, the views as you snake up Whinlatter Pass show the Lakeland fells in all their rugged glory, and there they are again, unfurled beneath your eyes as you mull over the daily-changing menus in the semi-circular dining room (a second area lacks the view but has a crackling log fire). The contemporary finish of the interior is matched by the dynamic cooking of Richard Collingwood, whose passion for regional produce is the starting point for one of the area’s most memorable culinary experiences. A harmonious opening combo of langoustine, asparagus and almond is held in check by the tang of grapefruit, while veal sweetbreads come with wild garlic and morels. Next up, local Herdwick hogget might be partnered by purple sprouting broccoli and merguez sausage in a technically-accomplished dish, or go for monkfish with burnt celeriac, squid ink and cockles. To finish, perhaps whipped white chocolate with the bold accompaniments of pistachio and Douglas fir. There’s a tasting menu with an optional artisan cheese plate, while the canny wine list has plenty of options by the glass.
