Padstow’s most famous restaurant, still packing them in

Padstow’s rather different these days from the little fishing village of Rick Stein’s youth, with great places to eat a dime a dozen, but this is the granddaddy of them all and still top of everyone’s list – so book well ahead for the busy season. There’s a sunny conservatory at the front, a roof terrace, views of the harbour, and a bright, friendly, informal air – seaside colours, comfortable seating, and an eclectic selection of modern art. Once you’re in, sit at the bar with a drink and watch them plating up starters and you’ll soon be keen to get cracking – literally, if you go for one of the magnificent fruits de mer platters. Otherwise you could begin with fresh-as-a-daisy Cornish crab with wakame, cucumber and dashi salad – sweet and vibrant flavours given a kick by wasabi mayonnaise – before moving on to a fillet of chargrilled seabass, perhaps – accurately timed, succulent fish complemented by a tomato and vanilla vinaigrette. Raspberry soufflé with pistachio ice cream is the perfect finale – excellently executed, beautiful to look at, and delicious.
