Wines by the glass

When it comes to seafood cookery, Nathan Outlaw is the big fish these days, with a TV career, a host of cookery books, and restaurants in Cornwall, London and Dubai. At the top end of the village of Port Isaac, with inspiring sea views, you’ll find the flagship restaurant, where admirers come to sample the food on which his reputation has been built. The first-floor dining room is an intimate space with Cornish artworks and an understated, natural finish, while downstairs the kitchen bar provides a few ringside seats to the culinary action. A six-course tasting menu is the way to go for lunch and dinner, with a wine flight if you want to leave all the decisions in their hands (and you’re in safe hands). Things get off the mark with cured brill, with the harmonious partnership of peas and mint, before pickled herring arrives with cucumber and seaweed. The seafood is spectacularly fresh, sustainable, and hailing from these parts, and the technical proficiency of the kitchen team maximises the flavours on show.  Salt-cod with cuttlefish, red wine and peppers may recall holidays in the Med, while lemon sole is as fresh as a daisy, with tartare hollandaise. Desserts are no afterthought, given the same level of precision and invention; malted orange profiteroles, say, with a top-notch chocolate sauce. The wine list includes a host of fizz options by the glass, including English and Japanese selections, with the rest of impressive the list arranged by style.
