The culinary bar is set high in this stretch of the Thames Valley stockbroker belt, and The Vanilla Pod delivers a sure-footed take on modern British cooking, its roots clearly in the French classics. The setting is a handsome townhouse where TS Eliot once lived, thoroughly refurbished with a chic contemporary look in brown and cream. First out might be gin-cured salmon with pickled fennel, or butternut squash risotto. The kitchen then extracts clear, robust flavours from top-class ingredients in main courses such as lamb rump with orange and saffron cabbage, and puddings could take in coffee and orange pannacotta, or classic tarte Tatin.
