Only a 10-minute stroll from the enchantments of the Roald Dahl Museum, the family-run Nags Head is a 15th-century country inn by the River Misbourne. Lightly modernised inside, it makes a relaxed setting for creatively fashioned cooking with the populist touch. Goose rillettes with apricot and ginger chutney and brioche make a full-flavoured preamble to herb-crusted cod in tomato broth with lentils and split peas, or lamb leg steak with wild rocket in wholegrain mustard jus. Pub classics such as wild boar and apple sausages with chive mash and red wine gravy keep traditionalists purring, while tempting puddings include a dandelion-and-burdock version of sticky toffee with date mascarpone.
