Once a country boozer that had fallen on hard times, The Woodspeen is now a destination restaurant with a swanky cookery school just across the road. The building has been reworked from top to toe and expanded with an impressive glass-fronted, double volume extension that has a touch of contemporary Scandi-chic about it. But it takes more than a fancy makeover to establish a foothold on the ever-competitive gastro scene, and the pull here is chef-patron John Campbell’s highly skilled modern British cooking supported by his naturally engaging staff. Impressive technique and clever food combinations are there from the off – roasted scallops with pork cheek, their assertive flavours highlighted with mulled wine pears and thyme and shallot purée. Next comes venison, a juicy pavé and faggot matched with bacon choucroute, mustard potato, Swiss chard and blackberry jus, or perhaps roasted cod with salsify, braised onion and potted shrimps. Desserts are a high point, judging by a finale that riffs on the banana and custard theme, deftly accessorised with salted caramel sauce and crystallised peanuts – think posh Snickers bar, and you’re there.
