The view from the south-facing conservatory extension of Elcot Park looks over the ha-ha and rolling fields down to the fringe of trees that hides the river – a peaceful prospect if ever there was. Despite its chandeliers and busily patterned floor, the Brasserie forgoes glitz in favour of soothing neutral tones, and an appealing menu of global comfort food. Smooth, creamy chicken liver parfait comes in a Kilner jar with a serving of pickled red onion, before pinkly roasted lamb rump turns up with some late season asparagus in a red wine sauce. Caramelised pecan tart offers good textural contrasts, offset by sharp orange cream and swipes of butterscotch sauce.
