It may be a little confusing for first-timers, but Deanes is a tripartite set-up, with dedicated meat and fish restaurants, through which bustly environs you pass to reach the more softly accented EIPIC dining room, which despite its shouty capitals, adopts a more sotto voce tone. The bar area is padded in white leather, while the restaurant itself is dimly lit and adorned with a trio of stylised full moons. Alex Greene worked his way from Dundrum to London and back to Belfast, and brings a cosmopolitan modernist sensibility to the kitchens, sending out a six-course taster that speaks of confidence and innovative energy at every turn. Highlights might be plump langoustine with leeks, shiitakes and smoked bacon, followed by a flawlessly timed serving of brill with salsify and lardo, before the main business of tenderly pink duck breast with chicory, carrot and mustard seeds. Chocolate desserts are a standout, perhaps a silky ganache with yuzu, coconut and coffee sauce. Accompanying wines are served either by small glass or shot measure, a helpful touch of flexibility that allows you to pace yourself from course to course.
