Michael Deane is a pillar of Belfast’s quality dining scene, with a little empire around the city (EIPIC, Meat Locker, Love Fish, Deanes Deli Bistro, Deanes Deli Vin Cafe, Deanes at Queens, Deane and Decano) providing something that fits the bill for any occasion. The Howard Street flagship is a high-flying sort of set-up, with a sober, predominantly grey decor, upholstered dining chairs at clothed tables, heavy drapes at the windows, and the overall demeanour of a place that means business. Danni Barry heads up the stoves and she's the driving force behind some exciting, progressive cooking, built on the very finest fresh local produce, and delivered via set-price, multi-course menus (including a veggie version). An opening combo of beef fillet tartare with oyster emulsion and pickled turnip is typically forthright, while flawless fish cookery brings roast halibut with celeriac fondant and purée, sea purslane and a rich bisque-like sauce. When it comes to meat, loin and shoulder of heather-fed lamb is partnered with Jerusalem artichoke purée and black garlic - another idea that is simply focused on flavour and executed with a high degree of skill. At the end, blackberry and meadowsweet crumble comes with meadowsweet ice cream and custard.
