Blink, and you’d miss the tiny coastal hamlet of Inverkeilor, were it not for for the discreet restaurant with rooms along the high street that has established the village on the map of gastronomic destinations. Thanks to the Watsons family's efforts over 30-odd years, the place ticks all the boxes for a food-and-sea-themed getaway, with boutique rooms and a beamed and stone-walled dining room making an inviting prospect with its contemporary good looks. These days, Gordon’s son Garry Watson heads up the kitchen side of things, keeping all-comers on side with his precise modern Scottish cooking. The drill is a fixed-price menu of four courses at dinner, opening with Isle of Skye scallops, say, with pea purée, duck ham and an aromatic dressing of curry spices to bring it all together. An intermediate soup course offers the likes of smoked red pepper and tomato velouté, then mains might showcase Angus beef fillet partnered by artichoke and truffle ravioli, bacon jam, hay-baked celeriac and Rioja jus. Finish with pistachio crème brûlée lifted with rhubarb compôte and mascarpone sorbet.
