A no-through lane past the Victorian church leads to the 13th-century Boat, in an unrivalled position on the banks of the River Dee; there was once a ferry crossing here. Expect to find a cosy flagstoned and oak beamed bar and several rambling rooms with open fires, stone walls and charming nooks and crannies. It’s a fine spot for a pint of local Weetwood Cheshire Cat and some modern pub food, best enjoyed in the glorious riverside garden. From the extensive menu choose tapas: Scotch egg with piccalilli; or hoisin duck spring roll with cucumber and spring onion salad to start; follow with steak, mushroom and ale pie; pan-fried sea bass with saffron mash potato, salsify and broccoli; or Welsh lamb cawl (soup) with crushed carrot and swede. A selection of steaks and sandwiches are also available.
