Compasses Inn was built in the 14th century and you can sense evidence of its history as soon as you walk through the low-latched door at the end of the cobbled path. Flagstone floors, low wooden beams and a roaring fire retain the timeless character of the pub but new owner Ben Maschler has a modern approach to the food and drink. The menu changes daily and is written around the freshest local ingredients. Pan-fried pigeon breasts, chorizo, lentils and sherry and walnut vinaigrette could be followed by fish pie with buttered greens, or Goan pork curry. Wash it down with a pint of Wiltshire-brewed Plain Ales Inntrigue.
