This old drovers’ inn is tucked away in the rolling green countryside of the Pennines, about a 20-minute drive south east of Huddersfield. An ideal stopping off place for travellers heading north to the Yorkshire Dales, the pub has built a reputation for good quality food and a welcoming atmosphere. The spacious interior has a traditional feel with exposed beams and large fireplaces. On summer evenings, sit out on the deck with a pint of Timothy Taylor or a glass of wine and soak up the fabulous views. The food served in both bar and restaurant successfully fuses traditional English with international influences. A typical three-course meal might be oysters po boy with Cajun spiced mayonnaise and fresh lime; rump of Yorkshire lamb with roast garlic potatoes, wilted root tops, butternut squash purée and Riesling jus; plum bakewell with Amaretto poached plums, almond vanilla clotted cream, plum purée and salted almond brittle. A wide range of lighter meals is available at lunchtime.
