Down a country lane bordered by wooded hills and pastures, this former farmhouse became a pub for the navvies building the nearby Totley railway tunnel in the late 1880s. Walkers and cyclists flock here, while dogs and children are made to feel welcome too. Chef Richard Smith co-runs it with the Thornbridge Brewery in Bakewell, which naturally enough provides the real ales. Richard's kitchen team produces braised beef shin and potato pie and wild mushroom and chestnut lasagne. They also smoke their own fish and meats, and giant feasts are available for groups of eight and over. For a dessert, try caramelised pear and white chocolate crumble. With three days advance, a feasting menu for a minimum of eight people is available. Summer barbecues are held in the field behind the pub and cricket is played next door.
