This 1830s backstreet pub was built to quench the thirst of steelmakers who lived and worked nearby, and in the hands of Lewis Gonda and Trevor Wraith it’s become a gem of a busy traditional local. The pub is in a conservation and popular walking area, where old buildings have been converted into stylish apartments, and The Kelham Island Museum round the corner tells the story of the city’s industrial heritage. The real ale list is formidable: four residents including Barnsley Bitter and Bradfield Farmers Blonde are joined by 10 ever-changing guests, as well as Westons Old Rosie cider, and a midsummer beer and cider festival at the end of June. Good quality traditional pub food (steak and ale pie, casseroles, veggie choices and a fish dish) is available six days a week. Great in the summer, the pub has won awards for its beer garden and floral displays. Folk nights on Sundays and a quiz night on Mondays pack in the punters.
