Local lore has it that in medieval times a witch lived here. Shape-shifting into a wandering hare, she was pursued home by the hunt, breathing her last in the cottage after changing back into a witch. Other legends and tales – including a resident ghost – abound at this pretty, pantiled pub, which may have been a brewhouse for local abbeys at Rievaulx and Byland. Things are pretty relaxed today at this secluded dining inn in the North York Moors National Park. You’ll find low-beamed ceilings and flagstone floors, a wood-burning stove offering a warm welcome in the bar, with beers coming from Rudgate and other Yorkshire breweries. An old-fashioned kitchen range features in the dining area. Chef-patron Paul Jackson's classy, award-winning menu relies on seasonal specialities.
