The White Horse Blakeney

Since the 17th century, this former coaching inn has been tucked away among Blakeney’s flint-built fishermen’s cottages, a short, steepish amble up from the small tidal harbour. The tastefully appointed, Adnams-stocked bar is stylish yet informal, the conservatory is naturally bright – both are eating areas, where the same menu and daily specials apply. Locally sourced food is a given, especially the lobster, crab and mussels from village fishermen, meats and game from Norfolk estates, soft fruit, salads, asparagus and free-range eggs from local smallholders, while rod- and line-caught mackerel and sea bass find their way through the kitchen door in summer. For a light lunch choose perhaps a sandwich; a seasonal salad; or an Adnams Broadside and Walsingham cheddar croquette with rainbow beetroot and dressed watercress. For something a bit more substantial, how about a White Horse classic – Norfolk loin of lamb, slow cooked bon bon, smoked carrot purée, heritage carrots, dauphinoise potatoes, curly kale and a red wine jus?
