Facing a lovely common where the village cricket team still plays during the summer, this renovated 17th-century pub retains plenty of original charm, down to the croquet lawn and large beer garden. In the colder months, roaring fires and a pint of ale are just the tonic after a long walk or before a seasonal meal from the set and a la carte menus. Combining classic English cooking with global influences, the menu makes good use of fresh, seasonal and local produce and has good gluten free choices. There's a set price menu for lunch and a la carte menu for dinner. Brancaster mussels in white wine with garlic bread could precede roasted duck breast, griottine cherry sauce and roasted sweet potato. Irish coffee meringue is a tasty way to finish. Look out for the live music events and monthly quiz nights.
