Well positioned in the heart of the Kentish market town of West Malling, with a pretty walled garden overlooking 15th-century stone barns. The handsome Elizabethan building offers a friendly welcome, whether stopping for refreshment in the stylish bar or eating in one its two dining area, plus a cocktail bar and a pizza shack with wood-fired oven. Local seasonal ingredients are expertly used in menus with a strong French influence. So a glass of wine may be called for – choose from 20 sold by the glass. In addition to the tapas or sharing boards typical starters are beetroot-cured sea trout. Main courses vary from pub favourites such as a selection of steaks, to celeriac, fennel and apple gratin; and Kentish venison burger. Puddings could be chocolate and orange tart; and spiced apple and pear crumble. Sandwiches are served until 6pm.
