Set in the heart the beautiful north Essex countryside, and only a mile from the A120, is this dining-pub that developed from two farm workers’ cottages more than a century ago. Flagstone floors, eclectic furniture and a relaxing colour palette all create a stylish interior; the welcome is genuine and the service, professional. The kitchen sources quality produce from local suppliers, including the surrounding estate, for the variety of well cooked food – from classic pub favourites such as fish and chips, through to more complex dishes, perhaps trio of Dingley Dell pork – belly, cheek and fillet with prunes in Armagnac, fondant potato, parsnips and kale. A roaring log fire makes a welcoming sight in winter after a long walk, while in summer the large garden is inviting. Families are very well catered for here, with a play area and toy box to keep little diners entertained. A private dining room with its own patio is available for a maximum of 22 people.
