In the same family since 1938, this 15th-century coaching inn is steeped in history – you might notice hot cross buns hanging from the original king post supporting the ancient roof timbers. Every year the oldest willing villager hangs another one, an unusual tradition that dates back 100 years to when the pub changed hands on a Good Friday. In the wood-panelled bar, regular brews like Crouch Vale Brewers Gold are backed by a selection of changing guest ales. The lunchtime bar menu offers sandwiches and light meals but booking is essential in the popular restaurant, where the daily-changing menu is driven by seasonal produce. You might choose local game terrine wrapped in Parma ham with red wine roasted fig and fried Guinea fowl egg; or rabbit and tarragon spring roll with swede purée, baby carrots and coriander sauce for starters perhaps. Follow on with tempura of cauliflower with caramelised cauliflower, parmesan, spinach and truffle oil.
