Known locally as ‘The Wipers’, the pretty Ypres Castle Inn sits beneath the castle’s ramparts and has been providing hospitality since 1640. As you'd expect with such a long pedigree, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, and the reading room is stocked with an eclectic literary mix and children’s games. The bar, featuring the original timber frame of the building, serves Larkins and Harvey’s, plus Biddenden cider, all to be savoured beside the log fire. There are magnificent views of Romney Marsh and the River Rother from the garden; the Rye Bay fishing fleet moors close by. Light bites include baguettes, ciabattas and bruschettas; popular choices are smoked haddock, salmon and pea fishcakes; local sausages and mash; or locally caught fish and chips. Booking is advisable for the traditional Sunday roasts. The pub hosts live music on Friday nights, Sundays and in the garden in summer.
