Set beside the large sloping green in one of the prettiest old villages on the South Downs, it's just a short stroll along downland paths from the inn to the magnificent coastal walk at the renowned Seven Sisters cliffs. The pub was once the base for smugglers landing contraband at the cove at nearby Birling Gap. The interior recalls such heady days, with log fires, beams, stone floors and ancient settles. With beers from the pub's own Beachy Head microbrewery, the best local brews are guaranteed – 'Legless Rambler' celebrates walkers on the adjacent South Downs Way footpath. The menu too is laden with the promise of local ingredients cooked to hearty recipes. Fresh fish features in several choices; or look for pan-fried duck breast with new potatoes, vegetables and rhubarb and ginger sauce. Steamed puddings lead the sweet choice, while the daily specials board extends the appealing culinary fest.
