Expect a warm welcome at this traditional village pub, housed in a 17th-century flint cottage complete with roses round the door and a lovely front garden. At the foot of the South Downs, ramblers will find it a good base for long walks in unspoilt countryside, especially along the old traffic-free coach road to the south. With its oak beams, and sloping walls and ceilings, the inn has been in the same family for over 40 years, and is well known for its good, home-cooked food, including organic vegetables and local meats, poultry and game. A typical menu starts with smoked salmon cornet filled with prawns; or grilled flat mushrooms marinated in garlic and fresh herbs. Follow with honey-roasted ham with poached egg and chips; confit of duck with cherry and brandy sauce and mash; or traditional beef lasagne.
