The whitewashed Sorn Inn dates back to the 18th century when it was a coaching inn on the old Edinburgh to Kilmarnock route; today it’s a smart gastro-pub that serves ales that include Corncrake from the Orkney Brewery. Menus offer the best of Scottish and seasonal ingredients. Choose crispy pork belly, honeyed celeriac purée, apple gel and pea shoots to start perhaps, then pavé of beef with foie gras, duck liver parfait croûton, Madeira cream, dauphinoise potatoes and green beans; or fillet of salmon with artichoke and saffron risotto, lemon dressing and pea jelly. Half a dozen classic dishes include smoked Ayrshire bacon carbonara; and ‘Mum’s’ steak pie, mash, and buttered cabbage. Finish with coffee pannacotta and chocolate doughnuts, or baked lemon curd cheesecake, lemon purée and mascarpone ice cream.
