Close to Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, this traditional 17th-century coaching inn is situated in the heart of the Peak District National Park. The owner continues to welcome thirsty travellers, and the miles of wonderful walks and country lanes favoured by walkers and cyclists means that there are plenty of them willing to occupy the cosy bars warmed by open fires. The interior is a successful mix of contemporary and traditional, a theme also reflected on the menu: expect a variety of stone-baked pizzas, sandwiches, salads, grills and sharing platters. Main dishes include beef, ale and potato pie, and classic nut roast topped with roast tomato sauce and goats' cheese. There’s also a beer festival in the summer.
