The Boot is the AA Pub of the Year for England 2016-2017. The Boot's first occupant in the 17th century was a cobbler who hung a boot outside to attract customers; while mending their footwear he'd offer them a glass of ale. Today there's no point bringing your shoes in for new soles, but ale is most certainly still offered – Clod Hopper, Tuffer's Old porter and Bumble Boots (a summer ale) are brewed on site. Now renovated and refurbished, the inn makes a good choice for a drink, a meal and for overnight luxury accommodation if you’re in this lovely part of the country. They provide first-class meals, beginning with a champagne breakfast. On their classics menu you’ll find the Boot burger, pastrami, smoked bacon and Swiss cheese; gammon, eggs and pineapple; and T-bone, rib-eye, fillet or bavette steaks. Turning to the à la carte, duck and foie gras parfait, smoked duck hams, oats and orange, followed by ‘fish du jour’ with cockles, caramelised onion, artichoke and hazelnuts might take your fancy. Chocolate, Boot beer and banana torte with peanut brittle makes an unusual dessert. There’s a beer festival in August.
