The Boot is the AA Pub of the Year for England 2016-2017. The Boot's first occupant in the 17th century was a cobbler who hung a boot outside to attract customers; while mending their footwear he'd offer them a glass of ale. Today there's no point bringing your shoes in for new soles, but ale is most certainly still offered – Clod Hopper, Tuffer's Old porter and Golden Boot are brewed on site. The inn makes a good choice for a drink, a meal and overnight luxury accommodation, if you’re looking to stay in this lovely part of the country. The team provide first-class meals, beginning with a champagne breakfast. On the lunch menu you’ll find the Boot burger, slow braised bbq ox cheek, Swiss cheese and fries; foragers mushroom risotto with Oxfordshire cheese and celery; and Packington pork belly with roasted squash, potatoes, pickles and piquant sauce. Turning to the evening selection, starters like scallop with smoked eel, burnt apple and curry mayonnaise, or soup of the day; followed by south coast cod with Jerusalem artichokes, taramasalata and radish might take your fancy. Miso banana parfait with yuzu, sesame crumb and bitter chocolate sortbet makes an unusual dessert. There’s a beer festival in August.
