Its history spans nine centuries, so this striking pink-washed village inn could be Cornwall’s oldest public house. Decorated with seafaring memorabilia, its typically Cornish stone-walled interior attracts families strolling up from Perran Sands and walkers from the South West Coastal Path. Real ales, lager and cider – all from Cornwall – enjoy pride of place in the wood-fire-warmed, softly lit bar; there is even a Cornish wine. After making your choice, take a menu outside to the Mediterranean-style patio garden if the weather is clement. Dishes are modern British in style, again making good use of locally sourced produce. A spring menu revealed courgette and spinach soup with Montgomery Cheddar rarebit; and warm shredded ham hock, cauliflower purée, pineapple salsa and fried duck egg as tasty starters. Continue perhaps with provençal fish and shellfish stew; or garlic and thyme roasted pork cutlet, creamed potato, Savoy cabbage, hogs pudding and apple butter; or spicy prawn and crab tagliatelle. Please note, the inn is closed on Mondays in winter.
