When you visit the Pandora, it’s easy to forget you’re in the 21st century – its spectacular setting on the edge of Restronguet Creek is timeless. Parts of the inn date back to the 13th century and, with its flagstone floors, low-beamed ceilings and thatched roof it’s not difficult to believe that little has changed since that time. While the Pandora’s wonderful setting remains unchanged, everything else in this cosy traditional inn is 21st-century comfort and quality. Publicans John Milan and Steve Bellman pay attention to detail in everything – from the food and service, to the decor and furniture, and have established the Pandora as an award-winning pub that aims to give customers an enjoyable and memorable experience whenever they visit. Alongside an excellent wine list and the local ales from St Austell Brewery, chef John Poole uses the freshest local and seasonal produce, including fish and shellfish bought from boats landing at the Pandora’s own pontoon. Dine on that very pontoon, at a table by the water’s edge, or in one of the series of little rooms inside, perhaps on Cornish shellfish in white wine, garlic, butter, herbs and cream, followed by seared pork cutlet with boulangère potatoes, pan-fried black pudding and a quince and red wine jus. Alternatively, start with seared scallops, winter squash purée, Serrano ham crisps and dill pickled cucumber, then rare-breed 8oz rib-eye steak. Orange marmalade and chocolate chip bread and butter pudding, or steamed honey and pecan nut pudding are two ways to round off a very enjoyable meal.
