Simple British pub food the Rick Stein way

St Merryn, just outside Padstow, is home to this ancient village pub, part of the Stein portfolio. Situated across the road from the parish church and overlooking a peaceful valley, the pub has remained very much the village boozer certainly to the happiness of the locals. The Cornish Arms oozes character, with slate floors, beams and roaring log fires, and they’ve kept the food offering equally traditional. A sample menu starts with grilled piri piri sardines; or butternut squash and thyme soup, continues with steak and ale pie; or lamb curry; and ends in sunken chocolate cake with clotted cream. Wash it down with a glass of Chalky’s Bite, named after the scene-stealing Jack Russell that appeared in his owner’s earlier TV programmes. Check with the pub for details of themed nights and the beer and mussels festival in March.
