‘Dogs, children and muddy boots welcome’ is the friendly motto at this little old whitewashed pub, just up the hill from town on the edge of Marlow Common, and standing in sprawling, flower-filled gardens. IT also boasts its own teepee which you can hire out for up to 40 people, with its own menu of tasty treats. The inside is spacious yet cosy, with dark floorboards, heritage colours, rich fabrics, and a wood-burning stove. All this sets the tone for early evening regulars gathered round a challenging crossword with a pint of Rebellion from Marlow, or Mortimers Orchard draught cider from Westons in Herefordshire. Relax with an aperitif and choose something from the generous gin menu. The imaginative modern British and international menu, put together with good food ethics in mind, is designed to appeal to all, beginning with ‘small plates’, such as Wobbly Bottom goats’ cheese, garden honey ham hock terrine using honey from their own beehive. Main courses cover ground from local squash and feta cheese tart with crispy polenta and watercress pesto; crispy crumbled Cornish hake fillet on leek, potato, bacon and mussel chowder with chive oil; to roast cauliflower and blue cheese macaroni gratin with charred spring onions and candied walnuts. Perhaps treat yourself to marinated pineapple and mango with coconut meringue, cream and candied cashew nuts; or chocolate chip browne with chocolate mousse crumble and torched marshmallow to finish. An exclusively European wine list has 33 by the glass and a wide choice of pudding wines.
