AA Pick of the Pubs
Bar menu
Garden

‘Dogs, children and muddy boots welcome’ is the friendly motto at this little old whitewashed pub, just up the hill from town on the edge of Marlow Common, and standing in sprawling, flower-filled gardens. Now refurbished, the inside is spacious yet cosy, with dark floorboards, heritage colours, rich fabrics, and a wood-burning stove. All this sets the tone for early evening regulars gathered round a challenging crossword with a pint of Rebellion from Marlow, or Mortimers Orchard draught cider from Westons in Herefordshire. The imaginative modern British and international menu, put together with good food ethics in mind, is designed to appeal to all, beginning with ‘small plates’, such as Wobbly Bottom goats’ cheese, basil quinoa, walnuts and local damson vinaigrette; and sautéed mushrooms, parmesan polenta and hazelnut aïoli. Main courses cover ground from roast salmon, Bombay spiced potato cake, Bucksum winter greens and coconut curry cream; slow-cooked beef cheek bourguignon with slow-roast garlic mash; to Jerusalem artichoke risotto with roast chervil root, beetroot jelly and toasted almond dressing. Perhaps treat yourself to warm pecan pie with burnt orange ice cream and caramel sauce; or Thai infused rice pudding with caramelised pineapple, mango and chilli syrup to finish. An exclusively European wine list has 24 by the glass and a wide choice of pudding wines, including one from the county of Worcestershire. Outside there’s a sunny summer terrace, pétanque piste and more than likely, red kites wheeling around in the sky.
