With a cottagey aspect outside, the interior continues the theme with a distinctly welcoming, nostalgic feel; time-honoured decor and furnishings enhanced by contemporary artwork. Bang up to date is the white pebble and waterfall designer garden, a pleasant, alfresco retreat of shrub and herb planters. The team behind this success story includes former TV chat-show host Sir Michael Parkinson, and his son Nick who brings a wealth of experience to the helm, and having won numerous awards. The head chef sources the best seasonal British produce to create the ever-changing range of dishes such as a starter of crab raviolo with chilli jam and shellfish bisque. Then graduate perhaps to the main event of Creedy Carver duck breast, red onion, beetroot and confit potatoes; or poached halibut in seaweed butter, cauliflower and a lemon and herb beignet. Definitely leave room for the vanilla soufflé and strawberry jam ice cream. There's ample opportunity to match food and wine, with 30 available by the glass.
