Formerly the Bricklayers Arms, this popular 19th-century Newbury pub was renovated in 2012 by licensee Pete Lumber, who has stamped his identity on the place. Downstairs there is a spacious and relaxing bar area with stitched Chesterfield seating and an open brick fire. Through the elegant portico from the street there’s a spacious bar showcasing local breweries and five cask ales on tap at any time including Two Cocks Roundhead, West Berkshire Good Old Boy and Mr Swift’s Pale Ale. The pub also offers a large choice of wines, which are proudly displayed in racks around the restaurant, and 26 of which are offered by the glass. Beyond the bar is a lounge and dining areas, and there’s a heated roof terrace where you can enjoy pizza from the oven. The kitchen sticks to the seasons and offers a broad choice including classics such as steaks from the grill, burgers and beer-battered fish and chips with crushed peas and tartar sauce. From the main menu, a typical three-course meal might include a starter of scallops, crispy pork, black pudding bon bon, pea and burnt lemon gel or duck parcel, chilli apple glaze and crispy capers, before moving on to venison loin, rosti potato, parsnip crisp, confit swede, chocolate and blackberry jus. If seafood is more your thing, try the cod with shaved fennel, pickled beets, radish, satsuma, dill and lemon gel. Finish with sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream ice cream or the board of three cheeses.
