Eastbury is a pretty downland village, in the ‘vale of the racehorse’ and the white-painted Plough, is a real local gem. Chef-patron Graham White, owner for four years, is mostly self-taught and his passion for Berkshire produce is very clear. You can eat alfresco when the weather is good, or in the comfortable restaurant. If you’d just like a pint and sandwich that’s fine, and you’ll be spoilt with excellent choices for both. There’s ales from nearby microbreweries, and if you discover that you are particularly fond of one of them and would like to take some home, the inn can provide a takeaway container for your purchase. For a sandwich how about bloomer toast with pink cannon of venison, Barkham Brie, walnuts and chilli jam; or a fish finger bloomer, chunky home-made tartare and crisp cos lettuce? The menu might feature dishes like shin of beef hash with poached duck egg and hollandaise, and mains such as smoked cod loin, dauphinoise potatoes with parsley and bacon velouté; or confit shoulder and rump of lamb, with creamed Savoy cabbage and mustard.
