This medieval town on the England-Wales border is famed for its ale, and is home to the oldest working brewery in the country. Overlooking the historic town with its mixed architecture and unusually painted houses (spotty, jigsaw etc.) sits the remains of a castle. In 1719 much of the stone from this castle was used to create The Castle Hotel, built on the old Baille (or enclosed courtyard) on the instruction of a wealthy landowner. Nearly 300 years on The Castle continues to welcome guests from far and wide. Many of the comfortably furnished rooms have stunning views across the Marches. Hearty meals are served in the bar, dining room and on sunny days on the garden terrace. Offa's Dyke, The Shropshire Way and Kerry Ridgeway are all within easy striking distance.
