This upmarket gastro pub with boutique bedrooms is looking pretty swanky these days after a makeover that made the most of the original character of the place (it's been doing the business as a coaching inn since the 18th century) and injected a bit of contemporary style. There's a serious approach to food and a pleasing lack of pretension to the modern British output. Kick off with home-cured salmon with bitter orange purée, before moving on to 'quack and mash' (slow-roasted duck leg) or ale-battered fish and chips, and desserts such as treacle tart with orange butterscotch, or dark chocolate fondant with stem ginger ice cream.
