Confident cooking in a former coaching inn

The High Street of Burford is rich with historic buildings, including The Bull, which first opened its doors in 1610 as a coaching inn. The facade maintains the period character, of course, but inside there's a little more leeway to bring in an up-to-date touch or two. The kitchen turns out bright, contemporary stuff, inflected with modern European ideas. Among starters, wild boar terrine arrives in the company of fig relish, and hand-dived scallops with black pudding, crispy bacon and pea shoots. Move on to traditional fish and chips or medallions of venison and hare in a rich red wine sauce.
