The gunpowder plotter was born here in 1570, in the shadow of York Minster. It is a darkly atmospheric den with an interior akin to stepping into an 'old master' painting, with log fires, wooden floors, gas lighting, cosy nooks and crannies, and cheerful service that suits the buzzy vibe. Menus keep step with the seasons and chalkboard specials follow a hearty modern pub-grub course, their down-to-earth simplicity apparent in a porcine plateful of roast belly and tenderloin of pork with a pig's cheek, home-made black pudding, apple purée and confit root veg. For afters, it's baked blueberry and vanilla cheesecake with fig compôte.
