Orrery may be pushing into its third decade, but it still cuts a contemporary dash with its classy good looks, polished service and skilful, modern take on classical French cuisine. Perched on top of the Conran store, it’s a stylishly conceived space, lit by a full-length skylight and arched windows giving leafy views over Marylebone; a roof terrace adds further to its appeal. Igor Tymchyschyn’s refined classic and modern French dishes exercise a powerful pull too, taking in cured sea bass, say, with cucumber, horseradish and kumquat as a refreshingly light way in, or perhaps fillet steak tartare with quail’s egg, sourdough and truffle. Alluring main courses are similarly well conceived and beautifully presented, among them such classic ideas as tournedos Rossini with celeriac and sauce périgourdine, or turbot with asparagus, morels and wild garlic. A five-course taster with a veggie version gives a comprehensive tour of the repertoire, concluding with something like Valrhona Manjari chocolate délice with pineapple and salted caramel tuile, but the copiously stocked cheese trolley is worth exploring before you get there.
