Laid on top of the Conran store like a luxurious layer of fondant, Orrery is a long and narrow, but stylishly conceived, space, lit during the day by an end-to-end skylight and arched windows with views over the heart of Marylebone. A roof terrace is not the least of its appeal. Finely crafted classic European cooking of sensibility and refinement exercises a powerful pull too. Salmon ballotine with fromage blanc, garnished with a quail egg and caviar, is a pleasingly light way in, or there may be truffled potato ravioli and mushrooms in a buttery emulsion for those who mean to go on as they start. Classic French presentations such as herb-crusted sea bass in chive sabayon, or magret de canard in an orange-tinged jus, served with caramelised fennel and braised cabbage, are among the alluring main dishes. Five- or seven-course menu gourmand deals give a comprehensive tour of the repertoire, concluding with something like lime-poached pineapple and coconut sorbet, or chocolate pannacotta and mango sorbet, but the copiously stocked cheese trolley is worth a detour before you get there. The Coravin system furnishes a fantastic list of wines by the glass, but even the regular glass selections have plenty to entice.
