A 600-year-old country inn with a mix of wooden and leather-look chairs at unclothed wooden tables. From their newly conceived menus, perhaps kick off with an interesting starter of Colston Bassett Stilton pannacotta, cauliflower couscous and port jelly, or Jerusalem artichoke velouté, winter truffles and crispy goats’ cheese nuggets. Then move on to beef cheek, crumble, chervil and white carrot; or Chart Farm venison loin, salsify, black pudding and beetroot – served alongside are pink fir apple potatoes and purple sprouting broccoli. Desserts should not be overlooked – be tempted by the simply described rhubarb jelly and custard, or a warm chocolate fondant with coconut ice cream.
