Set in seven acres of grounds, close to the shores of Lake Windermere, Briery Wood is a charming, white-painted property, dating to the late 19th century. It's a cosy, relaxing place with an informal atmosphere. In the dining room you'll find attentive staff serving modern country-house style cooking. Dishes might range from breast of wood pigeon with crisply fried smoked cheddar beignets and celeriac purée, to braised halibut with smooth, buttery creamed potato. A light, accurately cooked dessert of poached rhubarb with vanilla cream cheese, Grasmere gingerbread and lemon brings things to a close, and coffee comes with home-made petits fours.
