Alex Venables and Alison Ward-Baptiste took over The George a few years ago, transforming the three adjoining Georgian buildings into a smart and comfortable inn with an emphasis on food. Seasonal produce from the South West drives the menu, which combines pub classics with more inventive dishes. A light and airy twice-baked cheese soufflé starter might be followed by a panache of Cornish fish with crab butter sauce or confit duck leg with smoked game and sweet potato pasty, green beans, honey and orange sauce. Milk chocolate and orange cheesecake with dark chocolate sorbet is one of the comforting desserts.
