Along a narrow lane in a slip of a Wiltshire village, Guy and Brittany Manning's thatched pub is what most of us hope to find in a country inn. Inside, a big brick fireplace and bare-boarded floors, with menus chalked up on blackboards, set the tone, and the place is run with appreciable charm and cheer. A new private dining room and tied guest house add to the range of hospitality, but it's the regionally based menus of sharply defined country cooking that exercise the most obvious appeal. Beetroot-cured salmon in dill and citrus dressing with pickled cucumber might raise the curtain for Creedy Carver duck breast with potato millefeuille, braised fennel and griottines in red wine, or an Asian-inspired dish of wreckfish and mussels with a crisp spring roll, bok choi and shiitakes. At the end, there might be incomparable Passe Crassane pear, poached and accompanied by candied walnuts and sage ice cream. Sunday lunches are a locally revered amenity, and the breakfasts are a thing of beauty too, with eggs Benedict or cinnamon waffles and mascarpone among the temptations.
