This rambling 17th-century inn has two dining rooms, one with darkwood furniture under a beamed ceiling, the other with double-clothed tables. The kitchen aims high, delivering ambitiously creative dishes without ignoring old favourites like beer-battered haddock with traditional accompaniments. Seared scallops are partnered by a ham hock, pork and leek pie along with pea shoots, tomato and broad bean salad, plus bacon and tomato jam. Follow that with something like a winter warmer of ox cheek pie under a mash topping with root vegetable crisps, braised red cabbage and blueberry jus. Finish with a labour-intensive pudding such as strawberry and champagne jelly with basil pannacotta and foam and strawberry soup.
