An old stone village inn, the Craven Heifer offers compelling contemporary food on the fringes of the Yorkshire Dales. Seven-course taster and à la carte menus showcase the ambition of the kitchen's output. Start with 'cheese & pickle' (a ravioli of peppered goats' cheese served with scorched baby gem lettuce and a sherry reduction) or 'ox salad' with its smoked beef and oxtail fritter. Move on to North Yorkshire red deer with home-made black pudding and candied ginger, or a fishy number combining butter-roasted stone bass with sea vegetables and Shetland mussel stew. Dessert might be 'apple & custard' - an Earl Grey pannacotta, poached Granny Smith and cinder toffee.
