Set amongst 22 acres of gardens and woodland within South Downs National Park, the Wickwoods Country Club, Hotel & Spa is just south of the pretty village of Albourne and close to Brighton. The contemporary Glass House restaurant occupies an orangery overlooking the landscaped grounds. The crowd-pleasing modern European menu includes local steaks cooked on the chargrill, burgers and ribs, although there's plenty of other options. Start with ham hock terrine, pickled mushrooms, date and ale ketchup, followed by pan-fried cod, sautéed prawns, garlic, lemon and white wine. Apricot sponge and toffee sauce with vanilla ice cream is one way to round things off.
